The 2008 Pi Mu Epsilon induction ceremony was held on Friday April 25.
The ceremony was followed by a talk by Dr. Stephen B. Maurer,
Professor of Mathematics at Swarthmore College.
Six graduating seniors and three graduate students presented their work at Sigma Xi Symposium
and the CSC Research Colloquium.
On the evening of Wednesday March 12, 2008 the Department hosted
its Fourth Induction ceremony for the Lambda Chapter of Upsilon Pi
Epsilon Computer Science Honor Society at Saint Joseph's University.
The Department gratefully acknowledges Mr. Tom Foley's fifty years of service at SJU. We are truly honored
to have our very own Golden Hawk of 2008!
Computer Science students Jason Baker, Mallory Cosfol and Scott Hine
beautifully hand-painted two wall murals in the Department's main wing.
Patrick Stump, a Senior Clinical Data Scientist at GlaxoSmithKline, gave an informative talk entitled "Creating a New Drug -- Where Programming and Science Merge."
The Department's Holidays Party had an international flavor this year with students and faculty
sharing foods from different parts of the world.
Dr. Deborah Lurie (left) and Dr. Sylvia Forman (middle) received a Service Merit Award and a Teaching Merit Award, respectively,
for their outstanding contributions to the University and the Department. Congratulations to them both!
Saint Joseph's University, Nanjing University and Jiangsu Province in China establish a new academic
partnership and exchange program.
The UPE/ACM Chapter hosted a celebration of the 55th anniversary of MANIAC, an early computer built based on the von Neumann architecture of the IAS.
Two teams of SJU Computer Science and Mathematics students participated in the ACM national competition at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
A presentation was given on Computer Security by an alum, Glenn Brunette, who is a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems.
Students, alumni, and faculty gathered for the 2007 MACS Career Night.
Rick Lichtenfield and Debbie Carabini, representatives from the Computer Sciences Corporation, held
an employment information session for the undergraduate computer science majors.

For Prospective Students
As an R&D manager in one of the country's largest artificial
intelligence laboratories, I can look back and recognize the major impact
the professors in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department had on my future.
What is great about Saint Joseph's is that academic culture is encouraged through the
appointment of dedicated faculty, who provide instruction and facilitate
discussion across small classes.
